Formed in the DFW in late 2019, El Chanclazo is a musical collective that is made up of various musicians of Latin America that are specialized in performing a variety of Latin American musical genres. Co-lead by Mariana Grahl (vocals) and Pepe Valdez (guitar and musical director), El Chanclazo is committed to rescuing a specific repertoire that they consider is important to perform and that they enjoy playing.
Working their way through boleros, valses, rancheras, sones, rumbas, cumbias, huapangos, and chacareras, El Chanclazo tries to bring to its audience the experience of a night of what they call “Bohemia”. When Mariana and Pepe met in 2019, they realized that their musical backgrounds had a common element. Despite Mariana being from northern Mexico and Pepe from Lima, Perú, both of their musical traditions worked around beautiful compositions, groups of friends, spirituous beverages, food, and a true love for each one’s own music and culture. Bringing the best of each one’s background, Mariana and Pepe started working on developing a repertoire that is varied and significant to each one and comprised of music that they love and care for.
Besides Mariana and Pepe, Hebert Garcia (Drums and Percussion), Carlos "Fifo" Rengifo (Bass) and Juan Chaves (Trumpet) complete the rhythm section and the heart of the band. Hebert, Fifo and Juan, each bring their own musical experiences and backgrounds to the table and are key elements to the band’s sound, versatility, and overall groove.
With the collective experience of 5 of Dallas' most accomplished Latin Musicians and the deep passion and love for the music that they play, watching El Chanclazo is a great way to experience the vibrant culture of Latin America. If you are new to this music, an occasional listener or even a native Latino/a, you will for sure love the experience of listening and sharing an amazing time with El Chanclazo.
